Carl Pelini’s first class the first step toward restoring talent base at Florida Atlantic

Carl Pelini took the right approach in his first signing class.

Inheriting a 1-11 team, Pelini did not worry about filling specific positions as much as just filling a roster that was woefully short on talent.

“My charge to the coaches wasn’t so much position-specific or junior college-specific, but, ‘Let’s go out and get the best football players we can find,’” Pelini said. “Next year, we’ll worry about specific needs.”

Still, FAU’s coaches scoured the nation’s junior colleges and brought in nine players who are a year or two removed from high school.

And Pelini believes all nine will play.

“You would never recruit a junior college guy who I don’t think could contribute right away,” he said. “With the talented recruiting base like in Florida, you would expect that after the first year the junior college need wouldn’t be as great.”

Among those JUCOs is the player who likely will direct the Owls’ new spread offensive next season: QB Melvin German from Pearl River (Miss.) CC. German was the second-rated junior college quarterback last season, throwing for 346.8 yards per game. He had 21 touchdown passes.

Overall, Pelini was pleased with his class of 29 signees considering the time limit.

“I’m excited about this class,” Pelini said. “Obviously the coaches did a great job of putting it together in six weeks.”
